BASS LAKE — As the summer season kicks off, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office has reintroduced its Bass Lake Boat Patrol Unit. The team aims to ensure the safety and enjoyment of both residents and visitors on the lake.
Deputies & Equipment Ready
Full-time and reserve deputy sheriffs lead this seasonal initiative after receiving training in boating safety and law enforcement through California Boating and Waterways academies and P.O.S.T. facilities. Sergeant Jacob Tallmon leads the 2025 Boat Patrol Unit, which includes Deputies, Brad Funk, Alan Garcia, Lara Moreno, Sam Gutierrez, and Troy Paredes.
Additionally, the team is equipped with two 26-foot patrol boats and two wave runners. This allows the unit to be prepared to handle a range of water-related incidents, from enforcing boating regulations to conducting search and rescue operations.
To ensure public safety, specific regulations are in place:
- Speed Limits: A 5mph or no-wake speed is mandatory between sunset or 8:00 p.m. (whichever comes first) and 8:00 a.m.
- Boating Under the Influence (BUI): Operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited under Harbor and Navigation Code 655 (b)(c) & 655.6(a).
- Life Jackets: All individuals aboard personal watercraft or being towed must wear a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. Children 13 and under are required to wear life jackets at all times while on a vessel, paddleboard, or kayak.
Moreover, the Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of adhering to these regulations to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for all lake-goers. The Boat Patrol Unit is available to assist with emergencies and enforce these rules throughout the summer season.
