Starting A Business in Mariposa

If you plan to operate a business under a name other than your own, you must file a Fictitious Business Name Statement with the County Clerk. While the County does not require general business licenses, other County agencies may have specific requirements:

- Health Department: Food facility permits may be required for food-related businesses.
- Building Department: Permits may be needed for improvements or changes in building occupancy.
- Public Works Department: Encroachment permits and requirements related to parking or access may apply.

Home-Based Businesses and Rural Home Industries are permitted in many zoning areas, subject to development standards (PDF). Within the Mariposa, Coulterville, Fish Camp, and Wawona Town Planning Areas, Home-Based Occupations are allowed by permit. Many other business types are permitted depending on your zoning. Signage: Most businesses will require advertising signage, and it is your responsibility to check with the Planning Department regarding sign standards. It is important to consult with us prior to designing any signage.

Bed & Breakfasts and Vacation Rentals are permitted in most zones in Mariposa County. You must obtain a Transient Occupancy Tax certificate; an application and inspections are required to verify basic health and safety requirements. Agricultural Business: Chapter 18.04 of Mariposa County Code establishes a Right to Agricultural Activity. As stated in 18.04.020.A Findings and Policy: 
It is the declared policy of this county to enhance and encourage agricultural operations within the county. It is the further intent of this county to provide to the residents of this county proper notification of the county's recognition and support through this ordinance of those persons' and/or entities' right to conduct an agricultural activity.
