Integrated Mobility and Housing Strategy

Integrated Mobility and Housing Strategy

Overview

In Spring 2020, Mariposa County was awarded a grant from the Caltrans Sustainable Communities Transportation Planning grant program to support the development of the Integrated Mobility and Housing Strategy (IMHS). This project combined stakeholder engagement and a range of analytical techniques to identify a pragmatic strategy for developing coordinated workforce housing and mobility projects in Mariposa County.

A partnership between Mariposa County and Yosemite National Park, this collaborative effort evaluated the suitability of strategic sites for medium- and high-density housing outside of Yosemite,, determined the mobility enhancements needed to connect future housing nodes with employment opportunities within the park, and recommended a strategy for jointly implementing the housing and mobility investments needed to connect where Mariposans live to where they work. By aligning enhancements in mobility (including both regional transit and active transportation modes) with future investments in multi-family housing, the IMHS envisions a better connected, more livable, and equitable rural community.

On January 24, 2023, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt the Integrated Mobility and Housing Strategy, authorizing staff to pursue implementing its recommendations. Less than a year later, the County received a Strategic Growth Council grant to conduct the design, engineering, and environmental work for workforce housing at the Missouri Gulch site in the town of Mariposa, a key recommendation of the IMHS.
