Fireworks Ban Issued for High Fire Risk Areas

MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES — With the 4th of July celebrations approaching, CAL FIRE is reminding residents of Mariposa County and Eastern Madera County that all fireworks are strictly prohibited. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection MMU Unit issued the warning on June 27, 2025, in response to heightened fire danger across the region.

Fireworks are illegal throughout Mariposa County and in all areas east of the Madera Canal in Madera County. CAL FIRE Peace Officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend to enforce the ban.

Violators risk a fine of up to $1,000 and up to a year in county jail. Possession of large quantities of dangerous fireworks can lead to felony charges, including up to three years in state prison, and fines of up to $50,000.

Officials stress that anyone who starts a fire while using fireworks will be charged with negligence.

Moreover, a robust grass crop and dense vegetation from the spring have created ideal conditions for wildfires. CAL FIRE notes that fireworks significantly increase the risk of accidental blazes. They also encourage residents to stay vigilant, avoid using fireworks, and report any violations.

Public Alternatives

While personal fireworks are banned, the community can still enjoy approved displays at Lake McClure on July 5th and Bass Lake on July 4th, both scheduled for approximately 9:00 p.m.

CAL FIRE encourages the public to help prevent wildfires by remembering: that one less spark means one less wildfire.
