Wildland Firefighters are fighting the Horse Fire west of Lakehead with a coordinated effort of ground crews and aerial resources.
Firefighters worked overnight to hold and improve containment lines on the Horse Fire, preventing the fire’s spread while performing mop-up work and hazard tree mitigation.
With high temperatures and rugged terrain, we continue to prioritize firefighter and public safety as suppression efforts move forward. Additional resources remain committed to both incidents to build upon the gains already made.
The Horse Fire started following widespread thunderstorms and lightning on the afternoon and evening of June 30, 2025. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest saw more than 3,100 lightning strikes across the Forest, between June 30 and July 2, resulting in several wildfires. (Wildfire information for other current incidents on the Shasta-Trinity).
Additional resources are enroute to support the wildfire response. Firefighters will continue monitoring the forest in the days ahead for holdover fires that may emerge from this week’s storms.
We ask the public to please avoid areas where crews are working. Your cooperation helps firefighters contain these fires quickly and safely.
