Forest Service and CAL FIRE-RRU have responded to a vegetation fire east of the Santa Rosa Reservation along Highway 74.  The fire is currently estimated at 1,200 acres.  The fire is burning along both sides of Highway 74, and is threatening the rural communities of Springcrest, Alpine Village, Pinyon and Pinyon Crest.   

Several hundred fire fighters are now assigned to the incident, including a multitude of engines, water tenders, hand crews, and dozers.  Additionally, one night helicopter coordinator (HLCO), and three night-flying water-dropping helicopters are working overnight.  Fixed-wing aircraft will be returning to the incident in the morning, as well as an additional firefighters to switch out with firefighters who are working the difficult night shift.

Closures:  

Highway 74 is closed between State Highway 371 and Bighorn Drive in Palm Desert.  Check for the latest updates at https://roads.dot.ca.gov/?roadnumber=74 

A number of Forest Service Campgrounds, Roads and Trails are closed including the Pinyon Flats Campground, Ribbonwood Equestrian Campground, Santa Rosa Truck Trail and associated remote "yellow post" campsites, and numerous hiking trails in the area including Sawmill Trail, Cactus Spring Trail and the Upper Palm Canyon Trail.

San Jacinto Animal Shelter - 581 S. Grand Avenue, San Jacinto, CA.

Coachella Valley Animal Campus - 72050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms, CA.
