

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A crash that officers described as violent injured three people in Madera County on Monday and led to the arrest of one of the involved parties, the California Highway Patrol said on Tuesday.
The crash happened in the intersection of Avenue 18 1/2 and Road 19 1/2 on Monday at around 3:30 p.m.
A 56-year-old man from Gonzalez, California, was driving a RAM 2500 south of Road 19 1/2, approaching the intersection at Avenue 18 1/2. At the same time, a 67-year-old man from Madera was driving a 2010 GMC Tukon east on Avenue 18 1/2, approaching Road 19 1/2.
Officers add that the traffic on Avenue 18 1/2 in that area has the right of way; on Road 19 1/2, traffic is controlled by posted stop signs.
CHP reports the driver of the RAM crossed over double yellow lines as he approached the intersection to pass a big rig traveling in front of him. He blindly entered the intersection at a high rate of speed and ended up t-boning the left side of the GMC.
After the impact, the RAM traveled in a southeasterly direction, collided with a stop sign, power pole, overturned, and finally came to rest against a house on the southeast corner of the intersection. The GMC traveled in the same direction, collided with a tree, fencing and came to rest inside an irrigation canal.
CHP reports the driver of the GMC had to be extricated using the jaws of life, and he was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. The passenger sustained minor injuries and was not transported.
According to officers, the driver of the RAM was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. He was booked at the Madera County Jail under suspicion of DUI – he sustained minor injuries.
