Gunman caught after hospital evidence slips from pocket in Fresno, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man was arrested for attempted homicide after incriminating evidence fell out of his pocket while he was getting onto a hospital gurney.

Officers arrived at Blackstone and Grant avenues on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter notification.

There, they picked up four shell casings – and a call that a man had been shot multiple times. Officers say they found the victim nearby, with gunshot wounds to both legs. He was transported to the hospital, where he is in stable condition.

During that time, police say Santiago Cruz arrived at the same hospital with a stab wound to his chest. As he was hoisted onto the gurney, a pistol holster fell from his pocket. That’s when his ride decided to leave, abandoning both Cruz and the vehicle they arrived in.

Officers were subsequently called to the hospital. They searched the vehicle and say a pistol was found on the floorboard where Cruz had been sitting.

They later determined that Cruz and another man approached the victim before attacking and pistol-whipping him. But the victim fought back, stabbing Cruz in the chest. As the victim ran from the scene, Cruz fired multiple rounds at him, striking him in both legs.

Cruz was arrested and is in custody for the shooting, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and his parole violation. He will be booked into the Fresno County Jail upon medically clearing.

Anyone with information or who knows the identity and/or the whereabouts of the additional suspect is asked to contact Detective Alex Lopez at Alejandro.Lopez@fresno.gov.
