Garnet Fire Quick Facts:

Cooler conditions and good overnight humidity recovery are giving firefighters the opportunity today to make good progress on building planned lines as close to the active fire edge as possible. Along the western side, crews will work along the Sycamore Ridge Road to prevent the fire from spreading south and west. Even with few viable containment features in the area, this strategy is optimal for keeping the fire footprint as small as possible and today firefighters will work to “plumb” that line—insert hoses and water systems to prepare the line for when fire reaches it. At this time, the fire remains east of Dinkey Creek, but the large, steep drainage is a challenge to hold.

Along the top of the fire, the crews continue working slowly parallel with, and sometimes on, the McKinley Grove Road, doing clearing vegetation by hand, applying pre-treatment, and conducting critical strategic firing operations to remove heavy vegetation in front of the active fire front. The goal is to allow the fire to meet the holding features at the lowest possible fire intensity. Crews are carefully scouring the landscape for any spot fires from that may occur.

To the east, hotshot crews continue to work directly on the fire’s edge as they can, utilizing dozers to assist with small area of indirect line (away from the fire’s active edge) where needed. They are preparing the area northwest of the Garlic Spur for strategic firing operations to button up that eastern line.

The weather today is expected to be similar to yesterday, with seasonable warm temperatures and good overnight humidity recovery. The area along Poison Ridge north of Indian Rock continues to show active fire behavior, and residents are likely to see another large pyrocumulus cloud as temperatures rise this afternoon.
