Understanding the Challenges

Oakhurst has grown and changed significantly over the years. Transportation methods have evolved, revealing several gaps in the existing infrastructure. This has created safety issues and challenges with connectivity for residents and visitors alike. The County of Madera is dedicated to completing the transportation network while maintaining the quality of life and community values that define Oakhurst.

The Connecting Oakhurst study focuses on this vital task. It covers over 10 miles of roadway, emphasizing the importance of analyzing trail, bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit opportunities. Enhancing public safety is paramount. The study will examine 10.61 miles of road segments that include approximately 6.99 miles of State Highway and 3.62 miles of County roads.

The Objectives of the Study

The Connecting Oakhurst Study is funded by a FY 23/24 Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant and supported by the Madera County Transportation Commission (MCTC). This project aims to complement existing plans such as the 2005 Oakhurst Area Plan and the Madera County General Plan.

The study will design a planning document that identifies appropriate roadway design concepts. These concepts will enhance the safety, functionality, and evacuation routes of Oakhurst’s circulation system. The goal is to foster a connected and walkable community that serves the diverse travel needs of:

  • Pedestrians
  • Bicyclists
  • Public transit users
  • Tour buses
  • Trucks
  • Personal vehicles
  • Emergency response vehicles
Opportunities for Community Involvement

Residents will have multiple opportunities to participate in this project over the coming year. Community engagement is crucial in developing effective solutions to transportation challenges. Input from residents will ensure that proposals align with the needs and desires of the community.

The advisory committee for the study comprises various stakeholders, including:

  • Visit Yosemite/Madera County
  • Cal Fire
  • Madera County Sheriff’s Office
  • Oakhurst Chamber of Commerce
  • Yosemite Sequoia Resource Conservation District
  • Sierra Ambulance
  • Madera County Economic Development Corporation (EDC)
  • Madera Community College

These diverse perspectives will help guide the planning process and ensure that the study reflects Oakhurst’s unique character.
