MARIPOSA, CA – The Mariposa Fire Safe Council (MFSC) is excited to announce the commencement of services for the 2022-2025 CalFire grant program. Funded by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the Mariposa Countywide Brush & Chip and Storm Damage Ground Fuels Projects aim to bolster wildfire safety and resilience within the community.

Chipping Program
The Chipping Program is open to all residents of Mariposa County and offers a free service designed to help homeowners comply with California’s Public Resources Code (PRC) 4291. This regulation mandates that homeowners maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around their properties to reduce the risk of wildfire damage. By participating in this program, residents can ensure their properties are prepared for the fire season, contributing to the overall safety of the community.
Brush & Chip Program
In addition to the general chipping service, the Brush & Chip Program provides targeted assistance for low-income residents enrolled in programs such as PG&E CARE and Sierra Tel Lifeline. It also serves individuals who are disabled or participate in the PG&E Medical Baseline program. This support is crucial for those who may have difficulty managing brush removal on their own. Residents are encouraged to visit the MFSC website to review the specific brush stacking guidelines necessary for participation.
Storm Program
Alongside the chipping services, the Storm Program offers free assistance to the same vulnerable populations impacted by storm-related ground fuel hazards. This initiative ensures that low-income residents and individuals with disabilities receive the necessary help to mitigate potential dangers associated with downed trees and debris.
It is important to note that these grant-funded programs are available exclusively for inhabited residential properties. They do not cover fuel reduction efforts beyond the mandated 100-foot defensible space or on commercial properties. The MFSC reserves the right to decline service under specific circumstances.
How to Get Started
To request services, residents should visit the programs webpage and carefully review the Chipping Guidelines before submitting the request form. After submission, a private contractor will contact you directly to arrange the service. Scheduling is based on geographic area rather than the order of requests received, and current weather conditions may impact service timelines.
The Mariposa Fire Safe Council is dedicated to helping residents create safer homes and communities. By participating in these grant-funded programs, community members can play a vital role in enhancing their wildfire preparedness and protecting Mariposa County for years to come.
