About Mariposa County

Situated in the Sierra foothills on the edge of Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County offers stunning natural beauty, a friendly community, and a peaceful rural lifestyle. Covering 1,463 square miles and home to over 17,000 residents, it is a thriving hub of agriculture and tourism, attracting over 5 million visitors annually.

The Mariposa County government, staffed by a dedicated team of over 400 employees and supported by a $142 million budget, is committed to enhancing local quality of life through community engagement and efficient public services.

The Mariposa County Unified School District serves approximately 1,800 students across its schools, providing a strong foundation for lifelong learning and community engagement.

Beyond work and school, Mariposa County offers abundant opportunities for recreation and connection:

  • Outdoor & fitness options: mountain biking, horseback riding, reservoirs for boating and fishing, hiking and rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skiing, adult softball and soccer leagues, and fitness centers.
  • Arts, music & festivals: annual events like Music on the Green, local festivals, and live-music venues such as the Grove House and The Alley.
  • Faith community: a thriving network of churches and congregations that contribute to the county’s strong sense of community.
  • Agriculture & youth programs: a rich agricultural tradition highlighted by 4-H, FFA, the Mariposa County Fair, and the annual rodeo.
  • Library & youth activities: library programs for all ages and a variety of summer camps that offer creative and educational opportunities for kids.

Together, these qualities make Mariposa County a truly special place to live, work, and grow.
