Cibola National Forest completes ignitions on the Espinosa and Durfee Bolander Prescribed Burns

Smoke will continue to be visible

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – November 10, 2025 – The Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands (NF & NGs) fire crews successfully completed ignitions over the weekend on 1343 acres of the Espinosa Prescribed Fire on the Mountainair Ranger District and 191 acres of the Durfee Bolander Prescribed Fire on the Magdalena Ranger District. Fire managers on both burns report very favorable outcomes from both prescribed burns.

Smoke may continue to be visible from the Durfee Bolander around Highways 52 and 60 as well as the community of Magdalena.  Smoke from the Espinosa Rx may be visible from Mountainair, Punta de Agua, Manzano, Abo, Scholle, the Estancia Valley and Southern Manzano subdivisions.  Fire crews will continue to secure lines and monitor both burns until they are declared out.

Residents may experience smoke during and shortly after the prescribed burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. Smoke is expected to lift during the day, however, cooler overnight temperatures may cause smoke to settle into low-lying areas surrounding the burn location. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

Stay informed about scheduled prescribed fires through InciWebNew Mexico Fire Information and on the Cibola NF & NGs websiteCibola Facebook and Cibola X sites. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.
