OAKHURST, CA – The UC Master Gardener Program (Madera County) and the Sierra Senior Center invite you to an informative, hands-on presentation about one of our region’s most troublesome invasive weeds: Yellow Star Thistle. Join Master Gardener Randy Thomson on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 1:00–2:00 pm at the Sierra Senior Center (49111 Cinder Lane, Oakhurst) to learn practical, research-based approaches to identification and control.

Randy will demonstrate flame weeding (thermal weed control) as one abatement option and explain where it can be effective. Please note: because flame methods involve fire risk, the demonstration will comply with local fire regulations and safety protocols. The session will be held outdoors — dress in layers, wear comfortable gardening shoes, and bring sun protection. For your safety, maintain a respectful distance during the demonstration.
The next Madera class will be “Small Space Gardening”, a free workshop presented by Master Gardener Charlie Hindes. Charlie has years of experience in transforming small spaces into wonderful gardens. This class will teach what trees and plants work best in small areas and how to make a small space have a big impact. This event will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Madera Community College, 30277 Avenue 12, Madera.
