A Winter Storm Warning Has Been Issued For The Holiday

HANFORD, CA – A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet starting this afternoon, December 23, 2025. The Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect until 10 PM PST on Friday. The National Weather Service says to expect six or more feet of new snowfall from this event.

If you or anyone you know is planning to head into the high country, please be advised of the storm and potential dangers—plan for heavy snow with little visibility. Take supplies and necessities for any unexpected events.

Madera County flood watch for Tuesday through Friday – All Counties from Merced and Mariposa Counties to Kern County. This includes the San Joaquin Valley and coastal ranges, as well as the Kern County mountains and desert for all areas below 6,000 feet in elevation.

If you are traveling by car for the holidays, be sure to leave yourself enough time to deal with any unforeseen circumstances. The roads are likely to be busy and very wet, with some places flooding. Be prepared and not caught off guard.

A strong atmospheric river will bring heavy rainfall to California through the holiday week. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Wednesday in the Los Angeles Basin. Flash and urban flooding are possible, as well as mudslides and rockslides in the mountains. A heavy snowfall event will impact the Sierra Nevada mountains through this week, with several feet of snow expected.
