FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A blanket of dense fog has settled into the Central Valley, making driving dangerous and even disrupting travel at the airport.
Many flights in and out of Fresno have been delayed and cancelled because of the low visibility.
“I haven’t seen it this bad in quite a long time, actually,” shopper Steve Farinelli said.
A thick blanket of fog rolled into Fresno on Jan. 16. The fog was so thick that it lowered visibility and changed people’s plans altogether.
“On the way here, we couldn’t even see maybe 10 feet in front of us,” Mari Frances Cralde, whose flight was cancelled, said.
As streetlights fade and headlights only do so much, folks are slowing down.
“I work down the 99, and it’s been, you know, visibility has been nothing. It’s adding at least 20 minutes, 30 minutes,” Farinelli said.
For Don Sullivan, the fog is literally getting in the way.
“We just left the soccer game, and there are moments where you couldn’t see the other sideline cross the bench on the other cross field like it’s bad,” he said.
And it’s not just the roads – the fog is also impacting air travel.
“I wasn’t getting any notifications on my flight app, so I thought it was good to go,” Cralde said. She was supposed to be on her way to San Diego to reunite with her four siblings and parents. Her flight was at 7:30 p.m., but by then, five flights were cancelled.
“Fifteen minutes, before they told us that our flight, our plane, was circling around. Then they made the announcement shortly after that, saying that they couldn’t land,” Cralde said.
Now, she’s stuck in town.
“I’m just taking the L now. I’m just missing out on the fun,” Cralde said.
And back on the road, the fast-changing conditions are making some extra cautious until the fog clears.
“Just trying to plan ahead. That’s why we’re shopping tonight, actually, to try and avoid this through the weekend and tomorrow,” Farinelli said.
