MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A woman was arrested on child-abuse allegations after the 3-month-old she was watching was rushed into surgery with severe head trauma, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the non-relative caregiver, 50-year-old Tonya Hamilton, was arrested and booked into Madera County Jail.

The initial call came in on Jan. 13 when the infant was found to be unresponsive. After being transported to and rushed into emergency surgery, deputies say it was determined that the injuries were not consistent with any type of fall.
While the details surrounding what happened have not been disclosed, deputies warn the public against shaking babies.
“Shaking a baby, even for a few seconds, can cause permanent brain injury or death. If you are feeling overwhelmed, place the baby in a safe location and step away. Ask for help. There is never an excuse for shaking a child.”
The identity of the 3-month-old victim has not been officially released.
