Texas A&M Forest Service, in cooperation with the City of Lufkin and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), will be conducting a prescribed burn in Kit McConnico Park in Angelina County during late winter to early spring of 2026.
The prescribed burn is designed to meet multiple land management objectives, such as reducing the accumulation of hazardous fuels, improving forest health, improving access and visibility for park recreation, and mitigating wildfire risk.
Each prescribed burn is conducted only when weather and fuel conditions are favorable, and these burns are rescheduled if necessary to ensure the objectives for each unit have a high potential for success. Texas A&M Forest Service personnel will monitor all prescribed burns to evaluate achievement of goals and help guide future burns.
Nearby residents can expect to see smoke during ignition operations. These effects will be mitigated by conducting the prescribed fire on days with good ventilation so that the smoke will be dispersed away from communities.
Motorist are urged to take caution, heed warning signs, and be aware of fire crews working in the area.
More information will be published as weather conditions allow for safe burning operations.
