FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The man who was hit and killed by a DUI driver after abandoning his car on a highway in Fresno has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner identified the man as 37-year-old Andrew Magana of Fresno.

According to CHP, early Tuesday morning, Magana had run away from his vehicle on the Highway 99 to Highway 180 transition road, leaving the driver’s door open and the engine running. Responding officers removed the car from the road.

Around 30 minutes later, at around 12:45 a.m., officers were told about a man who was struck on Highway 99 south of Belmont Avenue. CHP responded and found Magana had been hit; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

During their investigation, officers determined the 22-year-old driver who hit Magana was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was treated for the injuries sustained from the collision and subsequently arrested.

The crash remains under investigation.
