YOSEMITE, CA – Winter weather has returned to the high country, bringing snowfall, road closures, and travel advisories across much of Yosemite National Park, including Yosemite Valley. Park officials say stormy conditions are expected to persist through the weekend, prompting safety closures and changes for visitors.
One of the park’s most anticipated seasonal spectacles will likely be affected. Officials report that the famous sunset “firefall” effect at Horsetail Fall is very unlikely to occur in the coming days due to heavy cloud cover. Because of the weather, the pedestrian route along the roadway leading to the viewing area has been removed for safety.
Travel into and around the park is also being impacted. Big Oak Flat Road — the continuation of Highway 120 connecting the west entrance to Yosemite Valley — is scheduled to close temporarily beginning at 6 p.m. on February 16, with conditions to be reassessed the following morning. The road to the Badger Pass Ski Area is also temporarily closed due to weather.
Despite the closures, Yosemite remains accessible via Highways 41 and 140, although tire chains are required on those routes. Park officials strongly advise travelers to carry chains, prepare for delays, and anticipate potential additional closures as the storm progresses.
Visitors can check the latest road conditions and chain requirements by calling the park’s information line at 209-372-0200 and selecting options 1, then 1.
Storm impacts are also affecting overnight accommodations. All campgrounds and lodging at Curry Village will remain closed at least through Wednesday night due to high winds and accumulating snow.
Officials emphasize that winter storms can rapidly change conditions in Yosemite and urge visitors to monitor forecasts and road updates closely before traveling. Anyone planning a trip this week should allow extra time, carry emergency supplies, and remain flexible as the park continues to respond to the ongoing storm system.
