The Sutton 2019 Fire started on the afternoon of February 27, 2026 approximately 6 miles east of Sonora. Yesterday, two fires in Sutton County next to Highway 10 were initially responded to by local fire departments. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters and heavy equipment.
This fire started during a period of elevated fire weather, including higher than normal temperatures and low relative humidity. Critically dry fuels, combined with this weather have resulted in large fire potential through much of Texas.
Crews worked with heavy equipment to line the fire, with engines following behind to extinguish and start mopping up. The fire was staffed overnight with local volunteer fire department firefighters. Texas A&M Forest Service will return to the fire 2/28/2026.
