COARSEGOLD, CA – The community has spoken, and a familiar name rooted deep in local western heritage will lead this year’s parade. Organizers of the Coarsegold Rodeo have announced that longtime horseman and community figure Wayne Tex has been selected as Grand Marshal for the 73rd annual event.

Tex earned the honor through a public vote that drew 363 ballots, with 140 cast in his favor — a strong showing that reflects the lasting impression he has made across generations in the foothill community.

Born in 1939 in Coarsegold to Henry and Harriet Tex, Wayne’s ties to the region span a lifetime. From completing solo cattle drives at just 12 years old to guiding pack trips into the Sierra Nevada, Tex has spent decades living the western lifestyle that the rodeo celebrates. A respected Chukchansi Yokuts elder, farrier, mentor, and lifelong horseman, he also played a role in helping build the Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds during the event’s early years.

Those who nominated him described Tex as “a true cowboy,” “a legend,” and “the epitome of rodeo,” praising both his generosity and his dedication to youth and family. Today, he continues to support his grandchildren competing on the rodeo circuit — a living connection between the event’s past and future.

A Tradition Rooted in Community History

The Coarsegold Rodeo itself has deep historical roots in the foothills. Local efforts to stage rodeos in the area date back to the late 1940s, when community members organized early events following World War II, laying the groundwork for what would become a longstanding regional tradition. Over time, the rodeo evolved into an annual gathering celebrating ranching heritage, horsemanship, and the western way of life.

By 1953, the rodeo had become established enough to be tied to Coarsegold’s centennial celebration, and it has continued ever since as a yearly event typically held the first weekend of May.

The modern rodeo grounds, in use since the 1970s, have hosted the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association competition for decades, helping solidify the event’s reputation as a key stop on the regional rodeo circuit and a cornerstone of community identity.

Today, organizers describe the rodeo as more than a sporting event — it’s a celebration of western heritage, youth involvement, volunteerism, and local pride that has brought families together for generations.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Rodeo

The 73rd Annual Coarsegold Rodeo is scheduled for May 1–2, 2026, continuing its long tradition of kicking off the foothill rodeo season each spring.

Events at the Coarsegold Rodeo include CCPRA-sanctioned competitions such as bull riding, barrel racing, and roping events, along with family-friendly attractions, vendors, and youth rodeo activities.

Tickets are available through the Coarsegold Rodeo website, with advance purchase recommended as attendance often fills the stands for one of the Sierra foothills’ most anticipated annual traditions.

With Wayne Tex set to lead the festivities as Grand Marshal, organizers say the 2026 rodeo promises to honor both the history of Coarsegold and the people who continue to shape its western legacy.
