Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands conduct prescribed burning operations on three national grasslands and two national forests in South Dakota and Nebraska:
These prescribed fire treatments help reduce the spread of invasive grasses and trees, improve forage quality for grazing, and lower the risk of high‑intensity wildfires by decreasing built‑up vegetation. Reintroducing fire to the landscape also improves wildlife habitat and helps restore natural ecosystems.
Prescribed fires are not approved until weather and fuel conditions meet strict safety standards. Community and firefighter safety is the top priority. Updates on current operations are posted on the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands' Facebook Page.
