ATWATER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Police in Atwater say the chain of events that led to a car ending up on the roof of a building on Sunday started when the driver was trying to pass another vehicle.

According to the Atwater Police Department, the blue 2008 Honda was going northbound on Santa Fe Drive and was trying to pass another vehicle. Instead, it left the roadway, struck a berm on the side of the road, and went through a chain link fence, causing it to become airborne.

The airborne 2008 Honda then struck a vehicle parked in the driveway and came to rest on the roof of a building. Inside that building were two people, and one of them was taken to the hospital with significant injuries. The family of the victim says they are praying for his recovery.

“The situation is just bizarre,” the victims’ ex-wife Jessica Cortez told YourCentralValley.com on Sunday. “Mom is very anxious. The girls are very anxious, not knowing what’s going on with their dad.”

According to Atwater Police, the investigation into the collision is still ongoing, and those involved are cooperating with investigators.
