In a region where wildfire preparedness is no longer optional but essential, local organizations are coming together to celebrate a major milestone for Eastern Madera County’s future resilience.

On Tuesday, June 2, community members, agencies, and wildfire preparedness partners will gather for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Fire Adapted Madera County (FAM CO) Wildfire Resilience Office at the Oakhurst Government Center, creating what organizers hope will become a central hub for collaboration, education, and wildfire readiness in the mountain communities.

The Ribbon Cutting & Resource Fair will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 40232 Junction Drive in Oakhurst and is designed to introduce residents to the organizations working behind the scenes to make Eastern Madera County safer and more fire-adapted.

According to event organizers, the new office will serve as a center for “wildfire resilience, community preparedness, collaboration, and regional partnerships” across Eastern Madera County. Residents attending the event will be able to meet local wildfire resilience partners, learn about active mitigation efforts, pick up resources and preparedness information, and better understand programs available to homeowners and neighborhoods.

The effort represents a broad partnership among local agencies and organizations including Madera County, the Coarsegold Resource Conservation District (CRCD), California Fire Safe Council of Eastern Madera County, Yosemite Sequoia Resource Conservation & Development Council, Yosemite Gateway Prescribed Burn Cooperative, and University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE).

Together, those organizations have spent years building a network of wildfire preparedness efforts ranging from defensible space assistance and Firewise community organization to prescribed fire training, forest restoration, community outreach, and fuel reduction projects. In many ways, the ribbon cutting symbolizes an increasingly coordinated strategy to help mountain communities learn to live more safely with wildfire.

Organizers say the June 2 event is not only about opening an office — it is about strengthening a wildfire-ready culture in Eastern Madera County.

For residents living in one of California’s highest wildfire-risk regions, the new FAM CO office may represent something increasingly important: a place where neighbors, agencies, and organizations can work together before the next fire starts.
