The Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds will welcome 50 local young cowboys and cowgirls on Saturday, June 13, as the 2026 Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds Mutton Busting Series kicks off its second season. The event begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. and is designed to provide local youth ages 4–8 with the opportunity to experience the excitement of rodeo in a fun, safe, and family-friendly environment.

With limited spots available during traditional rodeos, many children were unable to participate. The Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds launched the series to ensure more kids have the opportunity to ride, build confidence, and create lasting memories in the rodeo arena.

After an overwhelmingly successful first season, the league returns for its second year with riders traveling from throughout the Central Valley and beyond to participate.

“What makes this event so special to me is that it started from nothing more than an idea and a need in our community,” said Melissa Steward. “Seeing families return for a second year is incredibly rewarding. While some of our riders have aged out, we’re now welcoming younger siblings and a new generation of riders. Mutton busting is only a short season in a child’s life, but the memories and confidence they gain can last forever.”

The league focuses on participation, sportsmanship, and fun. Every rider receives a participation ribbon, while the Top Five ride times earn trophies and advance to the championship round at the Harvest Rodeo on October 17th, 2026 hosted by Veater Ranch and Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds. A Best Dressed Award is also presented to recognize outstanding western style and cowboy spirit.

The Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds is proud to partner with Gold Buckle Sheep Co., which travels from Northern California to provide quality stock for the series.
