Situational Update:

The Madera County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) has confirmed the first
human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Madera County for the 2026 mosquito season.
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people
infected do not develop symptoms, some may experience fever, headache, body aches,
rash, vomiting, or diarrhea. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological
illness.

Public-Health Guidance:

Residents are encouraged to take simple steps to protect themselves from mosquito
bites:

• Use EPA-registered insect repellent.
• Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors especially at dawn and dust.
• Remove standing water around your home.
• Keep doors and windows screened

Anyone experiencing symptoms after mosquito exposure should contact their
healthcare provider. Severe symptoms, such as confusion, severe headache, stiff neck,
or muscle weakness, require immediate medical attention.
