Parole Blocked for Convicted Killer David Weidert

California Governor Jerry Brown has blocked the parole of convicted killer David Weidert.

Weidert was sentenced to life without parole for the 1980 killing of Mike Morganti, a mentally disabled man from Clovis whom Weidert buried alive.

Due to changes in the law, Weidert was granted parole in January.

Morganti’s family, including his mother, Kathryn Groves, appealed to the governor to reverse the board’s decision.

"It should go back to that decision that he should never be released from prison" Groves said.

Gov. Brown issued the following statement Friday about his decision to block Weidert’s parole:

"I have considered the evidence in the record that is relevant to whether Mr. Weidert is currently
dangerous. When considered as a whole, I find the evidence shows that he currently poses an
unreasonable danger to society if released from prison. Therefore, I reverse the decision to
parole Mr. Weidert."
