Ride Along with Fresno PD Illustrates Rise in Robberies and Other Crimes

The Fresno Police Department has been kept extra busy the last few days, as a wave of shootings and robberies has hit the city. A ride along on Saturday showed exactly what the officers on the field deal with.

Only an hour into Sergeant Mike Manfredi’s shift, and he was called to the scene of an arrest of three robbery suspects. Two 18-year olds and a 17-year old was accused of stealing BB guns from the Walmart near Ashlan and Blackstone.

Manfredi said, "They’re walking through the Walmart, just walking down the aisles, pointing guns at people. So then they come up and they’re walking through Fashion Fair with what looks like guns, and are pointing guns and stuff at people."

The three were eventually caught at a liquor store up the street. One of the stolen guns was found in a trash can at the store.

"They’re looking at robbery of a business, even if you use a replica firearm," said Manfredi. "Just poor decision making that could have ended really tragically for them."

Manfredi said Saturday’s suspected robbery is just one of a handful they’ve seen in the last few days. On Thursday, a 68-year old man was robbed and shot in the leg near Park and White. The suspects in that case are still on the run.

Manfredi said Prop 47, which reduced some crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, is partially to blame.

He said, "So we have a lot of people with a lot of time on their hands. No conditions that used to keep a lot of them in line."

Manfredi said a lot of the recent crime has been spontaneous acts on the suspect’s part, which means there’s no way to track a trend on what the criminals are doing.
