Ride of Silence

Bicycle enthusiasts took to the streets in remembrance of those who have died or were injured in bicycle accidents.
They are riding for bicycle safety.

To honor fallen friends and family who lost their lives in cycling accidents.

And to those who have been injured in traffic collisions.

Karen McEwen is one of them.  She says, "Where they think it’s fun to come up right behind you and reeve their engine or to honk and try to startle you."

THE RIDE OF SILENCE IS A Worldwide memorial bike ride.   Cyclists take a 9.1 mile bike ride through Clovis.

Along the bike route are several ghost bicycles. They’ve been donated, painted white in memory of those in the area that lost their lives in accidents with motor vehicles.

Linda Leonard is riding in memory of her coworker Jim Healy.   She says,

"He was out for a ride before he went to work. And we both worked for Fresno Unified School district. It was an unbelievably quick and tragic accident. He was my college and he was my friend and I will never forget him."

Before the ride, organizers honored four people on bicycles who lost their lives in recent years.

Including 7 year old Donavan Maldonado who lost his life on Shepard Avenue in 2012.

According to Leonard, "We hope that they are looking out for us. My greatest fear is that somebody is going to look down to answer a phone or text and kaboom. It’s a very serious issue."
