SCOTUS Same-Sex Marriage Decision Sparks Strong Reaction from Both Sides of Controversial Issue

Although gay couples in California had the right to marry before Friday’s decision, the announcement sparked strong reaction from sides of this controversial issue.

While gay rights supporters celebrated, opponants spoke out about the Supreme Court’s decision.

"Today we were super excited to come in and color in the whole map!" exclaimed Kaylia Metcalfe-Armstrong with Fresno’s LGBT Community about a map of the United States that had red colored in on the states that allowed same-sex marriage.

Before Friday morning, 14 states on the map were white.

She said, "Now it’s everybody, so that’s huge! Part of being in the LGBT community is working to be seen as just a normal person, and a normal beautiful thing is getting married."

Metcalfe-Armstrong said Friday is about celebrating, but the work for equality continues.

"There are parts of Fresno that aren’t celebrating, that are angry about this, and that’s their right to be angry," Metcalf-Armstrong said.

Cornerstone Church Senior Pastor Jim Franklin said the supreme court got it wrong on Friday.

Franklin expressed, "What this basically has done has taken away the constitutional rights of the people of the United States."

The pastor said some of the Justices has overstepped their right to make decisions, and people in the 14 states that had banned same-sex marriage didn’t get a chance to vote. Franklin said his issue was not with same sex couples get the same rights, rather the definition of marriage, he believed, should not be changed.

"You don’t redefine a word simply because someone wants you to do that. Call it a civil union, give them all the rights for that. There are ways to do that. But marriage has been traditionally throughout eons of time defined as one man and one woman," said Franklin.

Metcalf-Armstrong ended, "I hope that you can see that we don’t mean you any harm and this is love. And you preach love, so let us be in love as well."
