Sex Education in Clovis Schools Gets $500,000 Update

A ruling on sex education will cost the Clovis Unified School District nearly half a million dollars.

A ruling by Fresno Superior Court Judge Donald Black finds that students have a right to "age appropriate" sex education. That includes topics like sex health and AIDS prevention.

The decision is the final chapter of a lawsuit claiming the district’s approach to sex education is out of date.

Kelly Avants, with the Clovis Unified School District says, "We were already engaged in the process of developing a curriculum. ACLU did not participate in the development of that curriculum. It was a great team of parents and teachers and nurses and health care professionals who did that work."

The district has to pay the ACLU nearly half a million dollars in legal fees.

Our CBS47 legal analyst says the ruling could mean changes in many California school districts.

"My first reaction is Judge Black has now given a ruling that state schools can look at as to what’s expected for the type of education that they need to have for sex education classes," explains Charles Magill, CBS47 Legal Analyst.
