Sky Fire burns 600 acres near Oakhurst

The Sky Fire burning north of Oakhurst has spread to 600 acres. It is 30 percent contained.

Oakhurst has seen it’s fair share of wildfires and they have become part of life in the community.

"Business as usual nice and busy. We haven’t lost any business yet," El Cid manager Tony Olmeda said.

The restaurant was evacuated last year for several days because of a wildfire. Friday night business was booming with tourist despite a wild fire raging in view.

"They do ask and they can see from the window and the back porch," Olmeda said.

The Sky Fire started Thursday afternoon when a truck caught fire on Road 632. Fire spread to nearby brush.

"It’s just dry real dry it’s not super hot yet but dry fuels are causing the problem," Burt Stalter with the sierra National Forest said.

Calvin Crest Conference, Paradise Springs and several camp grounds were evacuated. Both businesses have not been damaged. But at Paradise Springs red fire retardant was dropped by aircraft onto tables and chairs set up for a wedding this weekend.

The Red Cross says 70 evacuees are staying at Sierra Vista Church.

"That number has been fluctuating periodically. Some people are not spending the night but they are coming for meals, information or supplies," Jessica Piffero with the Red Cross said.

They have opened a second shelter in Oakhurst to accommodate those displaced by the North Fork fire just a few miles away.

"We are encouraging people to follow those evacuation orders, don’t wait for that second or third call. When law enforcement says to leave your home get your emergency kit and leave immediately," Piffero said.
