States Must Allow Same-Sex Marriage

Friday marks a landmark legal victory for the gay rights movement.

By a five-to-four vote, the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples nationwide have the right to marry in all 50 U.S. states.

The justices said states cannot ban same-sex marriage.

The Supreme Court case came after several lower courts overturned state bans on same-sex marriage.

President Obama hailed the ruling on Twitter, calling it a "big step in our march toward equality".

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his dissent saying to celebrate a desired goal and the availability of new benefits. But "do not celebrate the constitution, it had nothing to do with it."
