Turf Removal Tax Bill

Two Hanford students are credited with helping to forward a bill in Sacramento that promotes water conservation.

Bakersfield assembly member Rudy Salas introduced AB 603 yesterday. It will establish a state tax credit for those who replace conventional grass with landscaping that’s more drought-resistant.

Ari and Raj Grewal, who are brothers and students at Pioneer Middle School and Sierra Pacific High School in Hanford, suggested the bill by writing a letter to Salas.

"So we thought why don’t we have the same incentives and subsidies for the synthetic grass so we can have more homeowners install it and conserve fresh water," Arjeet Grewal, 14, said.

The bill calls for a $2 a square foot tax break for synthetic lawns statewide. Whatever the bill’s fate, the Grewal brothers are pleased that they’ve done good work.
