Unsure About The Flu Shot? Learn About It Alongside FM89 Reporters

Wherever you live in the Valley, whether it’s Hanford or Tehachapi or Merced, we all have to contend with the flu season. It’s already claimed one life in Kern County. Last year, the CDC estimates the flu killed 80,000 Americans . That puts influenza among the top 10 deadliest conditions in the U.S, along with cancers, heart disease and diabetes. But although there’s an easy way to reduce the risk of flu—the flu shot—around 60 percent of Americans elect not to get it. Why so much hesitation? I asked Dr. Jessica Mason, a faculty member at UCSF Fresno and an emergency physician at Community Regional Medical Center. One reason for doubt, she said, is that most of us don’t really know what the flu is. “It gets confused with the ‘stomach flu,’ which is not actually influenza at all,” she said. “Imagine the worst cold of your life, where you get horrible fevers and chills and you feel like you’re going to die.” Unfortunately, many do.
