WWII Veteran Struggles to Return to Fresno

World War II veteran George Vanderluis has family in the Valley. They are trying to find a way to safely bring him home. The biggest challenge facing the family is finding a Fresno veterans home that will provide George with the care he needs.

Eight years ago George was looking for a veterans home, but there wasn’t one in Fresno. So he moved to Hastings Minnesota near his aging sister. There, he became a resident at a local vets home.

Last fall his sister died and now at age 99 George wants to come back to the Valley, but his family fears he may not live long enough to find a veterans home in Fresno that is able to provide the care he needs.

Fresno Veterans Home offered this statement:

"Our Fresno Home staff would be honored to assist George and his family with his application process so he can be placed on a waiting list when he is eligible for admission to a CalVet Home. California state law requires that Veterans be residents of California prior to admittance. George and his family have not yet submitted a completed application. We also offer our assistance to George and his family in finding another home in the Fresno area. Wednesday, CalVet provided the Minnesota Home where George now lives with a list of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs licensed providers in the Fresno Area to share with George and his family."
