6 still in hospital after explosion at gun range

Continuing coverage today, following a massive gas explosion in northwest Fresno, last Friday.

It happened at the Fresno County Peace Officers range. It remains closed, as PG&E crews continue the investigation.

Right now, officials say they’re still collecting data and that could continue for several days, before any repair work can begin. The ruptured gas transmission line was buried 40 inches below ground, which PG&E says is considered a safe distance. PG&E says they do know there was construction activity in the area at the time of the explosion and that 8-1-1 was not called, prior to digging.

"All types of gas are potentially hazardous, which is why we encourage folks to call 8-1-1 even if they’re going to be digging in their backyard or doing a home project on the weekend," Jeff Smith, a PG&E public information officer, said.

Sheriff Margaret Mims argues, there was no digging happening at the time. PG&E says repairs could take a couple of weeks. Six people remain in the hospital today. Nearby residential areas have been deemed safe.
