Big Rush to File Taxes Before Deadline

About 13 percent of tax payers put off filing until the last week.

"If you are paying you wait until the last day," Maria Santos said.

She was one of hundreds who mailed their tax return at the Post Office in Downtown Fresno the day of the deadline.

USPS says their self service kiosks are open 24 hours a day. Allowing late filers to postmark their filing right up until midnight.

Liberty Tax in Fresno says most people coming in last minute are filing an extension. If you get an extension, that does not give you extra time to pay the IRS if you owe.

"You start accruing penalties and interest as of the 16th. It’s better to get in and file an extension. Let them know you are going to file but get it done as soon as possible," Marsha Charles with Liberty Tax said.

This year Charles says they received a lot of questions about the new health care tax credit.

"They have been receiving a form called a 1095-A and they are bringing that in after they’ve already filed because they needed to include it. So then we run into doing an amendment for those that have that form," Charles said.

If you miss the deadline you can be subject to a late penalty that can be up to five percent of your unpaid bill.
