Catacomb Music Festival Attempts to Revitalize Fulton Mall in Downtown Fresno

The Catacomb Party took place on Saturday at the Fulton Mall in Downtown Fresno. Catacomb is a large music festival that brought out thousands of people.

Organizers said it was it’s third party, and this year more than sixty national, regional, and local musicians played in the festival. Catacomb kicked off at noon and went on until midnight. There was also a beer garden and food trucks.

Organizers said Catacomb had originated in 2012 an album release for Fierce Creatures. They said as a way to thank the community for their support, they decided the event should be open to the public and allow people of all ages. Organizers also decided to have Catacomb in Fulton Mall to help push for the revitalization of Downtown Fresno.

Fulton Mall has certainly had its struggles, with many closed businesses and little foot traffic. But on Saturday, music was not the only thing buzzing around the Mariposa Plaza- so was cash registers.

Guillermo Moreno is the owner of Little Bean Café, a coffee shop that sat adjacent to the main stages of the party. He exclaimed, "I wish it were like this every weekend!"

Moreno predicted he was making at least 200-percent more on Saturday than on a typical weekend because of the amount of people that were in Fulton Mall. He said he hadn’t seen that much foot traffic in a while.

"Everybody here has been like, ‘How long have you been in business?’ ‘We’ve been here for about a year!’ So, the amount of exposure it’s getting us is amazing. It’s a blessing," said Moreno.

Catacomb organizers said the free festival is doing exactly what they had hoped: give back to the community and revitalize urban Fresno.

Paul Schlesinger, a concert go-er said, "It’s just great to come out here and to see what the Fulton Mall can be, especially with a lot of people here that usually don’t come to Downtown. It’s great to see that."

Schlesinger said the Central Valley can get short changed when it comes to music fests- with similar Catacomb events like Outside Lands in San Francisco and Coachella in Palm Springs.

He said, "It’s not something you can usually get here in Fresno. Like this is pretty rare, so I’m happy to be here!"
According to the Fresno Police Department, there were no major incidents to report.
