Day of Action helps local kids

A day of action is setting local kids up, with all the necessities.

The United Way gave away free books, food, haircuts, even cell phones with a year of service as part of its day of action. The mission is to strengthen people’s incomes, health and education.

"Wanting kids to be able to read at third grade level by the end of third grade. If children are able to read at grade level by the end of that grade level their chance of success is greatly enhanced," Bob Reyes, from the United Way, said.

United Way’s goal was to give away 10,000 books. They say 61% of children in low income households don’t have a single book in their home.
