Grand Fire (Wildfire)

Earlier today a lightning caused fire was discovered burning in the Monarch Wilderness on the Hume Lake Ranger District in Giant Sequoia National Monument. The location of the fire is extremely remote, firefighters are currently taking action to gain access to the Fire on foot and by helicopter. The Fire is burning slowly around the base of a large snag that was likely struck by lightning. Water drops from the helicopter has slowed the spread of the fire as crews continue to make their way in, growth has been minimal. In the past few weeks, numerous lightning strikes were recorded over the local mountains and are expected to continue. Fire personnel will continue to engage wildfires in ways that reduce risk to firefighter and public safety.
