Meathead Movers Offers Free Services to Domestic Violence Victims Through Marjaree Mason Center Partnership

Victims of domestic violence are getting some help starting their new lives. Meathead Movers in Fresno has partnered with the Marjaree Mason Center to provide free moving services for those fleeing abusive situations.

The partnership started last week, and the movers have already helped four families move.

For victims of domestic violence who feel stuck in their situation, escaping is not easy.

"There’s a lot of barriers, and there’s a lot of reasons why they don’t just flee," said Genelle Taylor Kumpe, executive director of the Marjaree Mason Center.

But Meathead Movers in Fresno is helping victims leave abusive relationships–literally. It’s in their mission statement.

"We provide premium moving services as well as assist victims of domestic violence with a fresh start in life," the company’s CEO said in a video on their website.

"We do a lot of emergency services, and that’s an unlimited amount of services. We also help on the back end getting them from a safe home into their new life," said Ali Coleman, move coordinator with Meathead Movers.

The company has been offering these services since 2001 in other locations, Coleman said.

But they only recently opened up in Fresno, and they’re getting right to it–partnering with the Marjaree Mason Center in Fresno, which serves more than 5,000 victims of domestic violence per year.

Meathead Movers is playing a crucial role in helping victims escape since abuse is not just physical; much of it is about power and control, Kumpe said.

"A lot of times victims are controlled financially, or just financially, as well. They have no access to finances," Kumpe said.

Financial control over a partner makes it difficult for victims to leave.

But there is help. Victims of domestic violence can contact any women’s shelter, and the shelter will get a hold of Meathead Movers.

"That way their expertise–they work with us in order to make sure the person who is going through the situation is really well taken care of," Coleman said.

Meathead movers train their employees to handle sensitive situations and be discreet in these kind of situations.

Those needing help can contact the Marjaree Mason Center 24/7 on their hotline at (559) 233-HELP or by visiting www.mmcenter.org.
