Tribute held for deceased California peace officers

A special tribute at the state capitol today honoring California peace officers who died in the line of duty.

Governor Jerry Brown attended the ceremony, as did thousands of law enforcement officers from around the state officers escorted family members who watched the names of their loved ones added to a bronze monument near the capitol. More than 1,500 peace officers are memorialized there. A white dove was released as each name was added to the monument and family members placed a red rose by their loved ones name.

"As I was listening and watching and reflecting, I thought this group here for these few hours embody the best of California, solidarity, camaraderie, memory and dedication, the rule of law. The traditions of our state and nation and the work that lies ahead," Brown said.

The memorial included a walk of honor, with Governor Brown and surviving family members walking to the memorial monument.

Thursday a similar ceremony will take place at the Fresno County Peace Officer Memorial. This year, CHP officers Brian Law and Juan Gonzalez will be included in the memorial at courthouse park.

In fact, their names are already on the monument. The 58th and 59th names to be remembered. The men were killed while responding to a call in a traffic collision last February near Kingsburg.
